Who is the luckiest man alive today? The driver the school bus in the photo below. He only sustained minor injuries when he was able to move out of the way of a flying kayak sailing through his bus front windshield during an accident.
The woman in the SUV who hit the bus head on after crossing the middle line of the road is listed in serious condition and was airlifted to a local hospital. The accident took place yesterday (October 30) in Hossick, New York.
Fortunately, there were no kids on the bus at the time of the accident.
This leads me to ask the question, "Was the kayak tied down properly enough if it was able to fly off the vehicle during the accident?"
In the accident photo, I don't see any broken straps that should be hanging from the ends of boat or evidence of a torn off roof rack. It could be buried in there and I just don't see it.
Over the years of running the rental department of a camping store, I have seen more then my fair share of improperly tied down canoes and kayak being returned to the store after a weekend on the water. It terrifies me.
Instructors need to take a couple of minutes in all of their intro paddling courses to make sure that they discuss how to get their boat from the store to the campsite safely.
