Fantastic Disabled Kayak Surf Film [Inspiration]

Video

Disabled Surf Kayaker

Take 5 minutes and watch this amazing and very inspirational short film called, "Birthright" directed by Sean Mullens.

The description on Vimeo is:
One man's struggle to transcend.

This humble film is about a friend of mine named Michael and his daily ritual to find his natural self through surfing.

The director, Sean Mullens posted an interesting comment over on the video site, “One interesting fact is that the place where we filmed him entering the water was the exact location he broke his neck and became disabled 30 years ago. He told me that time and time again he finds himself at that spot on earth without intention of being there...it is one of his favorite places to be.”

Goose Attack Video + Viral = Jay Leno

Video

Goose Attack!

Since January 26, the kayak community has been buzzing about the viral video with kayak fishing pro Drew Gregory getting attacked by a goose. It’s really funny and I’m 100% positive that I would have reacted in the same way if I was in the same situation.

Since the video was posted it has gone viral outside the paddling community with over a 100,000 views on YouTube. Somehow the link was passed along to the producers of the Jay Leno Show and it’s scheduled to be highlighted tonight (February 5th).

The popularly of kayak fishing over the past 2-3 years has been growing at a tremendous rate and some feel that it won’t take much for it to become a common method of fishing (compared to using a powerboat). Could this be the perfect exposure that kayak fishing needs to go mainstream? I hope so.

Tore your neck gasket? Replace it yourself [Instruction Videos]

Video

Bomber Gear released a very nice instructional video of how to replace a torn neck gasket yourself. It really isn’t very difficult and like many other projects, the first time always takes the longest. After replacing several of my own, I got it down to a fine science.

$15 for the gasket and $5-6 for glue sure beats the $60 repair cost of my local outdoor shop.

Kayak Skeg or Rudder Systems [Kayak Geek Videos]

Video

Surfing around on youtube I stumbled into the ultra geeky world of kayak manufactures videos. Below is a collection of different videos that various manufactures have put together highlighting their skeg or rudder systems.

I thought it was interesting that with so many different designs out there each video is clearly demonstrating that their particular design is vastly superior to everything out there on the market.

Paddling Films to Watch on a Cold Fall Afternoon

Video

This fall is shaping up to bring us some really good paddling films. I already talked about the new Gordon Brown DVD, Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown which is being released right now. It’s really good and I have watched a rough preview copy a couple of times already. Below is a quick trailer for it to wet your appetite.

Paddle to Seattle PosterThe other movie that looks like it could do well in the upcoming paddling film festival season, is Paddle to Seattle. It’s being described as a “Journey through the Inside Passage is a feature documentary chronicling the progress of two intrepid adventurers paddling handmade wooden Pygmy kayaks from Alaska to Seattle.”

Video: Kayakers help after tug boat flips at Skookumchuck Narrows

Video

Here is some super fantastic footage of an accident (and rescue) recently at the Skookumchuck Narrows in British Columbia.

From the YouTube description: A tug boat pulling a barge at Skookumchuck Narrows suddenly capsizes trapping one man inside the boat for 10 minutes. Kayaker Dave Fusilli of Team Demshitz paddles out his Pyranha Kayak in an attempt to save the man from the wreckage. Luckily no one was killed and a nearby tug pulled the barge and submerged tug to safety before the tide went out and the rapids of Skookumchuck became dangerous.

Flood Rescue Fail [Video]

Video

I have the highest respect for rescue crews but a posting today on the Fail Blog really made me laugh (like it always does).

I hate to be the one to point out technical mistakes in others but the crew should have made sure that the dog walking alongside of the flood rescue boat had a lifejacket on.

Cool Video: Galactic Center of Milky Way Rises over Texas Star Party

William Castleman created this fantastic time-lapse video of the night sky during a recent Star Party in Texas. Keep an eye out for the absolutely vivid colours of the Milky Way as the earth spins around about 1/2 way through.
