New Official Method of Artificial Respiration Unveiled [History Lesson]

Tuesday, 20 April 2010 10:57 Written by David H. Johnston
If you were a regular subscriber to Popular Science in 1952 you would probably be all excited to read about the brand new method of artificial respiration that has just been approved by the US Armed Forces, Red Cross, Bureau of Mines and the Boy Scouts. This new method is so revolutionarily that they have decided to train 20,000,000 Americans later this summer.

As you can see by the photos below it’s a touch different then what we do today.

To help you stay current, here are the proper steps as developed by Dr. Holger Nielson:

Shaun Baker kayaks over a waterfall. Photo Credit: Times OnlineBack in 1996, Shaun Baker broke the record for the worlds longest kayak freefall when he dropped 65 feet off the Aldeyjarfoss falls in Iceland. Now, he wants to shatter that record by going over the biggest drop of them all; Niagara Falls. How will he avoid the rocks and immense amount of water poring over? His newest invention, a jet powered kayak.

A crime scene, a confession and now 4 years later, a body

Sunday, 01 February 2009 22:41 Written by David H. Johnston
A friend of mine just noticed in the paper that this week marine police found the remains of Pei Ding Xu who was murdered 4 years ago in Lake Ontario. The body was in a duffel bag weighted down by cement bags. The creepy part is that the location is the exact place where we regularly paddle in the bumps and waves of the Western Gap.

In fact, we regularly hang out and take a break over the area where the body was found. The fact that the water there is only a couple of meters deep, doesn't make it less creepy.

Here is the  location in Google Earth for those who are interested.

Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:13 Written by David H. Johnston
Looking for a good reason never to go on the water and just stay at home watching TV? Here are three reasons to be scared of the water.

Angler in Illinois catches what may be a piranha
Well, in Joliet, Illinois, an angler caught a fish that might just turn out to be a piranha. Yes, that fish. He was fishing in waters warmed by a generating plan on the Des Plaines River.

Judging from a photograph Johnson took, the fish could be a red-bellied South American piranha, said Melissa Kruth, a spokeswoman for the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

Fireworks Blasts Off Part of Man's Foot while in a Canoe

Thursday, 10 July 2008 06:50 Written by David H. Johnston
Remember kids, fireworks and canoes don't go together. That is what Darren La Page from Eau Claire, WI will tell his grandchildren.

Doctors say he is lucky to be alive after firework blasts off part of his foot while he was out on a local canoe trip last Saturday night.

He says the plan was to launch two fireworks from shore not actually in the canoe which is what ended up happening.

"The next thing I knew my cousin said 'cover your ears' and I turned around and he was lighting the fireworks. I was more or less in shock and the pain started right away. I pulled my foot up and it was split and the canoe was split. I could see my heel was gone," Darren says.
