Cardboard Canoe Race
The Famous
Cardboard Canoe Race
It's coming up this weekend and if you are not planning to make your way to White Squall in Parry Sound, Ontario this weekend then you are truly going to the wrong place.

This year is looking to be bigger and better then ever with the Reel Paddling Film Festival kicking things off on Friday night. Saturday and Sunday there are workshops both on and off the water all day.

Saturday night they will be hosting the Arrogant Worms who will be crawling into town with their very distinct music and comedy.

As far as presenters, some of the best paddlers and instructors will be there from across Canada and abroad including: Andy Hawksford, David Wells, Gary Barton, Kelly Blades, Liz Burnside, Serge Savard, and the ultra-famous, Zack Crafts. Oh yeah, I will be there on Sunday.

Easily the best festival (that I attend) of the year but since it is so early in the season, everything afterwards is downhill. Don't tell anybody I said that.

How tough is your handheld GPS?

GPS in Toilet Mad Mariner just revealed the results of it's unique stress test just to see how strong various GPS bodies are. Basically they wanted to see just how much lickin' they could take and keep on tickin'.

The test involved dropping it in a bucket of dead fish, the old man overboard test, the toilet test and the infamous, 5-year-old-children-playing-with-it test.

How did they turn out? Well you will need to read the article to find out.

Social Media Marketing for Your Small Business
Written by David H. Johnston

I really like small business news and marketing. In fact the business end of the outdoor industry is one of the things that enjoy watching.

As everybody knows, the internet is one of the most efficient and cost effective methods for marketing your paddling school or guiding company. Everybody has a website but just having it listed on Google doesn't automatically cause your phone ring off the hook with people wanting to throw money at you.

If your website isn't getting much traffic, it is time to start marketing. But figuring out which program to use or how to get started is sometimes more difficult then it is worth. Also, it can get expensive and with the razor thin margins of the outdoor industry, it can be a real risk throwing money into a campaign that might not get a good return on your investment.

I recently stumbled upon a great little article that looks at how small businesses on a very limited budget and can take advantage and succeed using social media networks. The article highlights eight great programs or companies that will help to drive traffic to your website. And the great thing is that the majority is free. If you haven't heard of Yahoo Answers, Digg, Delicious or StumbleUpon then you need to read it.

Tasman CrossingIf your social calendar is free this Wednesday, April 30th, Tasman kayakers, James Castrission and Justin Jones will be at Ngamotu Beach, New Plymouth, New Zealand to unveil a plaque that has been erected to mark their world record breaking expedition. The trip is on the record books for the longest ocean crossing by a two-man kayak and the first successful kayak voyage across the Tasman Sea.

New Plymouth District Mayor Peter Tennent is hoping to see another good crowd there from 11.45am this Wednesday.

"The locals have really taken James and Justin into their hearts so it would be great to have a sea of people at the beach again when the two of them unveil the plaque," says the Mayor.

"The boys will be arriving at the beach by waka and they'll have a chance to address the crowd as part of the ceremony.
