Oregon Scientific Portable UV monitor Find yourself out on the water a lot? Of course you do!

Oregon Scientific recently released a "Portable UV Sensor" which monitors incoming UV rays and can calculate exposure time based on the SPF of your sunblock.

Features include:
  • Know when to protect yourself and your family from harmful UV rays with this compact, stylish UV monitor
  • Exposure timer uses UV, SPF and skin type to calculate recommended exposure time, and updates automatically with changes in UV intensity
  • Monitors current UV levels and temperature and has a built-in digital clock
  • Includes one CR2032 coin battery and easy-close carrying strap
  • 3.13Lx1.75Wx0.75D"

No word on waterproofness but an interesting gadget non-the-less. Would be helpful for me on cloudy days when I forget to put on sun screne. I always get deceived by clouds...

At only $19.99, it won't break the bank.

I think I will spend my $20 on a bottle of spf 50 sunscreen. This strikes me as simply another gadget to go wrong and take up space in my kayak or back pack.

I rarely burn and don't use sunblock, but I am always into the gadgets. I purchased a UV watch a couple years ago and found it handy (nice to know when the best time to turn-over is) anyway battery died and havn't replaced it as of yet. Your advertised UV gadget looks cool. Did you find out if it is waterproof or at least splash-proof yet?

No, I didn't find any word on it so I am going to suspect that it isn't.
