SPOT LLC. announced a major upgrade to their super cool messenger today.
The new design address several of the major complaints that users have been griping about; including smaller size, a stronger GPS antenna which will provide a stronger signal and better performance when deep in the forest and an extra LED light to signal when the message has been sent.
Along with the above changes, the biggest upgrade is the addition of a new message button which will allow you to now customize two non-emergency messages. They still have the “I’m OK” button but now you can also send out an, “I’m at the trailhead, come pick me up” message (or anything else you want).
The physical unit has been completely redesigned and is about 30% smaller and weighing in at only 5.2 ounces. Added to the new case are safety covers that go over the SOS and help buttons so I don’t accidentally set off a false alarm.
SPOT hasn’t released pricing information yet but look for the unit to be available in September. If you can’t wait for the newly released unit, you can find a great deal via a mail-in rebate if you buy the old model now. It looks like SPOT is trying to reduce their stock before the new unit is available.
