Champaign, IL--New multimedia resources can help instructors create aquatics programs for special needs, and adequately prepare for the AAPAR credential.

Introduction to Adapted Aquatics (Human Kinetics, 2009) is a DVD of the best practices in adapted aquatics today. The closed-captioned DVD focuses on people with disabilities, their access to swimming, and adaptations to instructional aquatics programs. The DVD demonstrates procedures for aquatic assessments; recommendations for goals, objectives, and placement; training of staff; and modifications to instructions, strategies, equipment, policies, and swim strokes. This DVD assists aquatics personnel in advocating for and supporting people with disabilities.

Introduction to Adapted Aquatics Instruction Course (Human Kinetics, 2009) provides an overview of the field and is meant to motivate instructors to learn more about the field of adapted aquatics, and provides users with a basic understanding of six major disabilities of childhood. The course goes beyond the definition, characteristics, and secondary conditions associated with each disability to cover the implications for participation, learning, safety, swim skill development, and contraindications.

The upcoming Adapted Aquatics Instructor Credentialing Prep (Human Kinetics, January 2010) acquaints students with the field of adapted aquatics through the same units of study as Introduction to Adapted Aquatics Instruction Course. Users then go beyond the introductory information into more advanced study of topics important to planning and implementing an adapted aquatics program. This course comes packaged with two additional resources: the textbook Adapted Aquatics Programming, Second Edition, and the Introduction to Adapted Aquatics DVD.

These courses meet the mandatory certification requirements for swimming instructors specializing in training persons with developmental disabilities per Section 514.072, Florida Statutes; it also qualifies for CEUs under Pennsylvania Act 48.

Developed in part by aquatics expert Monica Lepore, the Adapted Aquatics resources provide students with an in-depth understanding of 21 disabilities, including learning the definition, characteristics, and secondary conditions associated with each disability; along with specific aquatic implications for participation, learning, safety, swim skill development, and contraindications. Lepore's accompanying textbook, Adapted Aquatics Programming, Second Edition, is the leading text in the field and expands upon and reinforces the content presented in the courses and DVD.
