Yesterday CNET posted a mini gallery of somebody who transformed their canoe into one of the greatest boats on this Class-M planet we call earth.

This was put together for the annual Venice Canals Association holiday boat parade and of course it won first place. Captain Kirk would have had it no other way.

Remember kids, fireworks and canoes don't go together. That is what Darren La Page from Eau Claire, WI will tell his grandchildren.

Doctors say he is lucky to be alive after firework blasts off part of his foot while he was out on a local canoe trip last Saturday night.

He says the plan was to launch two fireworks from shore not actually in the canoe which is what ended up happening.

"The next thing I knew my cousin said 'cover your ears' and I turned around and he was lighting the fireworks. I was more or less in shock and the pain started right away. I pulled my foot up and it was split and the canoe was split. I could see my heel was gone," Darren says.

I don't know what I would do if this happened to me. Imagine you park and quickly run into the corner store to grab a few things for home only to discover when you come out, the there is now a canoe sitting on top of your car.

Actually, thinking about it, I think that I would enjoy it...

Dennis Bohrn and his three other friends were out canoeing over the weekend in Twin Falls, Idaho when they find the worst thing possible, a victim of suicide. They decide that they can't leave the body out there on the lake so they call paramedics and the police and bring the body back to shore.

When they get back, they hand over the victim to the paramedics and corner only to discover that a police officer writing out a ticket for each of them for $85. The reason? No PFD's in their boat.

No, I'm all for PFD laws and making sure that you wear them when you are out paddling but this has got to be one of the most insensitive things that could possibility happen. Imagine, you just found a body, you drag it home thinking you are doing the right thing only to find that it cost your group $340?

They probably would have received a much better response of the office just handed out a warning. The reason for a citation is to evoke a behavioural change next time, but this just brings out a lot of bitter feelings...
