Kelly Blades and I are very excited to make episode 8 of Kayak Mainline available to you.

This week on Kayak Mainline we learn about:

  • a marriage proposal in a canoe that ends with a call to 911,
  • Michael Jackson karaoke in kayaks,
  • the epic North American Odyssey,
  • enough paddling stats to come out your yin yang.

We also get Bonnie Perry on the phone to talk about her BCU 5* certification. Did you know she is one of only four woman in North America who have it? Amazing.

For those of you keeping track, you will notice there was no announcement of episode 7 here. The story I’m sticking to is that I uploaded it to the server just as I was going out the door last month to the Gales Storm Gathering with the plans to post a note about it when I got back. Yeah, I forgot.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did putting it together.

Kayak Mainline Episode 6.5 Streaming Now!

kayak mainline logo

Kelly Blades and I are very happy to announce the 6.5th episode of Kayak Mainline. We named it 6.5 because it’s an update to the 6th episode we pushed out the door last week before discovering that the sound quality wasn’t quite as good as it could have been. Sorry about that. This one is much better.

On Kayak Mainline episode 6.5 we learn about monster crocs, monster sturgeons and a crazy beaver attacking kids. KIDS! We also discover that Netherland weather forecasters might get in trouble if they are wrong. Plus your kayaking questions answered.

This one was actually recorded several weeks ago but August was so busy that we haven’t had time to publish this until now.

Kelly Blades and I are really excited to finally release Kayak Mainline episode #5. Things have been so busy over the past four or five weeks since we actually recorded this episode that we just got time to push it out the door today. Sorry it took so long. Sadly we have been to busy actually paddling.

With that in mind, we have episodes six and seven already complete so we should be releasing them closer together over the next couple of weeks to get ourselves caught up.

Here is what we learned about in this episode:

  • NOAA officially comes clean about mermaids
  • Another shark on kayak attack
  • Don’t go swimming in Lake Michigan if you are a man
  • We discover Google’s plans to map England’s waterways for Google Maps

We also have a great interview with Keith Wikle, one of the organizers of the Gales Storm Gathering coming up this October.

Episode 4 of Kayak Mainline is posted and ready to roll. We decided to push this one out the door early rather then waiting for our usual two week break mainly because it was all done and sitting there so why not?

This week on Kayak Mainline we investigate the story of the canoeist who shot a power boater in the butt because waves tipped his canoe over. We also learn about the whitewater kayaker who got injured in a landslide triggered by the helicopter who was there to rescue him. Finally, did you know some guy is solo paddling across the Atlantic Ocean right now in a double kayak? We figure out what he is doing and discover more about his boat.

Oh yeah, we bring in our kayak fitness expert, Erik Ogaard from Toronto and try to get fit by osmosis over the phone.

In episode three, Kelly Blades and I cover hard-hitting topics like polar bears trying to escape from zoos, a very famous mystery writer who was one of Britain’s first female surfers and the world’s longest kayak.

Also, we answer many of life’s toughest questions (as submitted by you).

Hot off the electronic press is the second episode of Kayak Mainline. If this is your first time learning about it, Kayak Mainline brings you the latest outdoor & kayaking news as well as interviews with the biggest names in the sea kayak world.

In this episode Kelly Blades and myself find out if one can paddle or surf for 365 consecutive days. Bam Margera gets injured kayaking over a 100-foot waterfall and a Saskatchewan fisherman catches more than he bargained for. Finally we have a great interview with Shawna Franklin & Leon Sommé from the Body Boat Blade kayak school who fill us in on creative ways to teach rescues and the grand announcement of the Jellyfish award.

You have a couple of options for listing. You can stream it below or download the .mp3 directly. If you are into RSS feed, here is the link. I’m currently in the process of getting the podcast listed in iTunes but it takes about a week for it to show up. I will update everybody when that hurdle gets passed. Fingers crossed!

As always, we are looking for your feedback. Based on comments from our first episode we shortened the podcast a touch and it’s now just a speck over an hour.

My good friend Kelly Blades and I were talking a while back about how outside of Simon Willis’s amazing work there really isn’t anybody covering sea kayaking in podcast form.

After talking about it for what seems like a year we decided it’s time to step up and do it; so without further adieu, we are proud to announce the first episode of our brand new series, Kayak Mainline.

The plan for Kayak Mainline is to talk about what’s happening out there in paddle land. We cover weird outdoor news, local gossip as well as interviews with the movers and shakers of the sea kayaking industry.

In our first episode we talk about cheetahs attacking, sharks attacking as well as a certain German woman attacking South America. We also have a great interview with Danny Mongo who is the Regional Sales Manager with Werner Paddles.

This is our first one so of course we sound like a bunch of amateurs who don’t know what we are doing but that is what we are very good at so it comes natural. I’m sure the next one should be better.

You have a couple of options for listening. You can either stream here online or download the .mp3 directly and import it into iTunes. We want to make your commute to work that much more interesting.

I’m in the process of sorting out things like RSS feeds and subscriptions for iTunes and I hope to have that stuff sorted out shortly.

Enjoy!
