Think your last camping trip was extreme? Try camping beside a volcano

Extreme camping has risen to a new level. Back in June 2010, a group of researchers and guides decided to plumb the depths of Nyiragongo Crater which is in the heart of the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Here are a couple photos from their adventure.

Behold the world’s largest campfire.

Franck Pothé approaches the lava lake. According to the photo description he needs to make sure that the wind is always at his back to push the heat away and is in constant contact with other team members via radio who are monitoring the swirling winds.
